    Title / Role

    6th Grade Teacher

Subject(s) I Teach or Learning Interest Area

I am reigniting my teaching life. After 20 years in the classroom, its time to develop new skills, pedagogy, and teaching methods. As I learn, I revisit my current practices and see plenty of opportunities for tweaking, as well as areas to blow up and begin anew. The areas of focus for my classroom are Watershed Study, Code.org, and Anti-bias/Anti-racism curriculum. The student body at my school is 98% Hispanic/Latino. I am not bi-lingual, but many students and their families are, some attending our school for generations while others are newly arrived immigrants. We are located in a Near South-Side predominantly Hispanic neighborhood of the most racially segregated city in the United States. We are within walking distance from the University of Wisconsin School of Freshwater Science, the Menomonee Valley, the Hank Aaron Trail, and Milwaukee's "Polish Moon" at Rockwell International.

The resources and problems of our location have value as a catalyst to spark interest in my students, who should learn "in the field" to appreciate the abundant resources of their community. Creating an educational experience that is culturally and personally relevant to who they are and who they may become is a way to build purpose and skills for all of us in the classroom and the community. My ten-year plan? I will make Watershed Study, Computer Science, and Social Justice the cornerstones of 6th grade with Ms. Frankowiak.
