More About Me
Richard has enjoyed two careers, one is general or secular education and one in Jewish education. Richard’s initial teaching experience started in New York City working with elementary students with special needs; he then taught middle schoolers with limited English proficiency in Queens, and spent fourteen years teaching Social Studies to high school students in Maryland. After leaving high school teaching, he served for two years as a consultant with the Maryland State Department of Education working with at-risk schools. From 1986 to 2001 Richard was the associate coordinator, and then coordinator of Professional Development Schools, a collaborative teacher training and mentoring program between the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park and ten Maryland secondary schools. After retiring from the University of Maryland, Richard was invited to serve as an adjunct professor at Baltimore Hebrew University in Maryland and Gratz College in Pennsylvania teaching graduate courses in supervision and staff development, instruction and classroom management for Jewish educators, staff developers, rabbis and cantors. With his wife, Elaine, the Solomons have co-authored numberous books and articles including Toolbox for Teachers and Mentors: Lesson Plans for Pre-Service and In-Service Judaic Educators (2010); Toolbox for Teachers and Mentors: Moving Madrichim to Mentori Teachers and Beyond (2009, and other books and articles. Richard is the creator of http://Jewish-education.org, an online website for training Judaic Studies teachers and staff developers, and a blog, Mentoring Jewish Students and Teachers http://richarddsolomonsblog.blogspot.com/, whose focus is to empower Jewish teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, professors, consultants and staff developers to integrate web technology into their instruction and teacher training. With his wife, Elaine, Richard is now on a mission to provide people living in communities around the world with the Judaic knowledge, pedagogical and supervisory skills to empower their children and young adults to become Jewish educators, mentor teachers, staff developers and educational leaders.
